About CryptoTaxOwl
A free crypto tax calculator that does its work in your browser, shows where every rule comes from, and is honest about what it can’t know.
Why it exists
Working out tax on crypto is tedious but not mysterious: collect every exchange history, value each transaction, apply your country’s matching rules, add it up. The tools that do it for you tend to follow the same pattern. You import your history for free, then pay to download the report, with the price rising with the number of transactions. Your history is processed on their servers, and you’re often encouraged to connect exchange API keys.
We think the report should be free, that small holders and regular savers shouldn’t pay more for buying little and often, and that nobody should have to hand their financial history to a website to file a return. Browsers are now capable enough to do the whole calculation on your own device, so that’s how CryptoTaxOwl works.
Who runs it
CryptoTaxOwl is operated by Infinity Square Labs Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16880965), with its registered office at 483 Green Lanes, London, N13 4BS, United Kingdom. We’re a small independent studio that builds free, privacy-first web tools. We aren’t a firm of accountants or tax advisers, and we don’t present ourselves as one.
How it’s funded
Content pages such as guides and this one carry a small number of clearly labelled ads. The calculator itself runs in a separate, ad-free part of the site, and ads never appear inside it or next to your results. That keeps the core report free, permanently. We don’t take affiliate payments from exchanges, we don’t promote buying crypto, and we don’t sell data, not least because we never receive yours.
How we keep the figures accurate
- Official sources only. Every rule comes from the tax authority’s own guidance or legislation: HMRC, the IRS, the CRA, the ATO, and the German EStG and Finance Ministry. Each rules file lists its sources and the date they were checked.
- Worked examples as tests. Where an authority publishes worked examples, such as HMRC’s pooling examples, the calculator must reproduce them.
- Visible working. Each figure in a report shows the rule that produced it, so you or an accountant can check it.
- A public record of changes. When rules or calculations change, the changelog says what changed and when.
- Honest limits. Where the rules are unclear, or your files are incomplete, the report says so rather than guessing quietly.
Mistakes are still possible. If you spot one, please email errors@cryptotaxowl.com. The disclaimer explains what the figures are and aren’t.
We never ask for recovery phrases, private keys, API keys or payments. If anyone contacts you claiming to be from CryptoTaxOwl and asks for any of these, it isn’t us.
