Please read this before relying on any figure from CryptoTaxOwl. The short version appears in the calculator and on every page of every report.

The short version

CryptoTaxOwl produces figures for general information. It isn’t tax, legal or financial advice, and it can only be as complete as the files you import. Check the warnings in this report, keep your own records, and speak to a qualified tax adviser if you’re unsure. You are responsible for what you file.

What the figures are

CryptoTaxOwl applies published tax rules to the transactions in the files you import and the values and choices you provide. It reports the results and explains which rule produced each figure. It doesn’t know anything about you beyond what you give it: your other income, your residence status, whether your activity amounts to a business, transactions you didn’t import, or elections you’ve made with a tax authority.

What they aren’t

  • Not advice. Nothing on the site is a recommendation about what to file, how to arrange your affairs, or whether to buy, sell or hold any asset.
  • Not a tax bill. The calculator doesn’t show “tax due”. Where it offers an estimate, it does so only when you’ve entered the inputs it needs, and labels it as an estimate.
  • Not a filed return. We don’t submit anything to any tax authority, and we don’t act as a tax return preparer or agent.

Country-specific limits

  • United States: compare proceeds with any Form 1099-DA you received.
  • United Kingdom: rules applied are HMRC share-pooling rules for individuals; not for companies or traders.
  • Canada: does not determine whether your activity is business income.
  • Australia: does not apply the personal-use asset exemption unless you choose to.
  • Germany: applies §23 and §22 No. 3 EStG for private individuals; not for business assets.
  • Generic mode: these are standard cost-basis calculations, not your country’s tax rules. Check with your tax authority or an adviser.

Rules change

Rules data shows the date it was checked against official sources. Tax law and guidance can change after that date, sometimes with retrospective effect. Check the changelog and the official sources linked from each report.
