Changelog

What changed, and when

Tax rules change, exchanges change their files, and we fix things. Every change that can affect a figure in your report is dated here, alongside the official rule changes the calculators reflect.

Each report is stamped with the rules version and price method it used, so if you generated a report before a change listed here, you can tell whether it’s affected. Entries marked “Rule change” describe changes made by a tax authority and link to the official source; the others are changes we made.

  1. Release

First public version: report workspaces for the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Germany (Germany in English), the generic calculator, the capital gains, staking income and CSV converter tools, five guides and export help for ten exchanges.

  2. Prices

Price data at launch: values from your exchange files, values implied by the other side of a trade, and values you enter. No bundled crypto price dataset yet, and no price lookups from third parties. Currency conversion uses ECB euro reference rates where needed.

  3. Rules data

Guidance checked against HMRC, IRS, CRA, ATO and German EStG/BMF sources for tax years 2024 and 2025 (UK and Australia: 2024-25 and 2025-26).

  4. Rule change · Canada

The government cancelled the proposed increase in the capital gains inclusion rate. The rate stays at one-half, which the Canada calculator applies. Prime Minister’s Office

  5. Rule change · Germany

The Federal Ministry of Finance published a revised letter on the income tax treatment of crypto-assets, replacing the 10 May 2022 letter, with expanded record-keeping duties. BMF letter

  6. Rule change · US

Basis must be tracked wallet by wallet rather than across all accounts (Rev. Proc. 2024-28), and brokers begin reporting gross proceeds of digital-asset sales on Form 1099-DA. Form 1099-DA instructions

  7. Rule change · UK

Capital Gains Tax main rates rose from 10% and 20% to 18% and 24% for disposals on or after this date, so 2024-25 reports split gains at 30 October 2024. HMRC rates and allowances

  8. Rule change · Germany

The exemption limit (Freigrenze) for private sales under §23 EStG rose from €600 to €1,000 a year. §23 EStG

If a figure, rule or date looks wrong, email errors@cryptotaxowl.com with the country, tax year and what you expected. Please don’t send your transaction files; a description is enough. Corrections are listed here with the date they were made. You can also read how the calculations work or check the deadline calendar.
